Electronic Paper Pop-up Book by Jie Qi

Artist and designer, Jie Qi, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering at Columbia University, created an inspiring electronic pop-up book while studying at the MIT Media Lab last summer. I love her sense of color and youthful illustrative style. She displays each interactive concept with a simple color scheme and an easy to understand visual story. The stories include pollinating bees, the lighted solar system, a flashing big city, snapping Venus fly traps, twinkling musical moon & stars, and sparkling underwater life.  Watch the video of the orange book page in action below. Afterwards, scroll down and see her beautiful blooming paper flowers video as well.

Light on your feet

Johanna Hyrkas, a designer featured at IMU, a design collective that showcases works from young Finnish- and Helsinki designers has knitted a lighted carpet. There is not much information on the project, but it seems to be light rope that has wool knitted or crochet around it.

You can see more IMU designers here.

Dos and Don'ts of Everyday Techno Fashion

I saw this post on Frisky about the NY Times article and noticed the comments about how bright my necklace is. I just had to let people know that I AGREE!

In the photo from the NY Times, it looks like I am wearing a super bright fantastic necklace, but in real life it just isn’t that intense. I make it brighter for events or PR, because well, it's pretty and the shadows casted are interesting.

For me, technology is about subtle hints and hues, not about a blinking ravers’ paradise on my body. Just because its electronic, doesn’t mean all rules of fashion should be thrown out. And, for those of us who love technology accents, we need to recognize that the fashion world is not comfortable with wearable light shows, unless they are on the runway. To help demonstrate this idea I have put together a short list of a glamour girls dos and don’ts with electronic clothing and accessories for everyday wear - stress on the word “everyday.”

NY Times Before & After

I shared my redecorated living room with the NY Times recently and am really happy with the results.

Before the transformation my living room didn’t have much of a spark. In fact, for months it looked like a space I just moved into, and lacked any personal style. As a designer, I just had to do something about it.

Japanese Lighted Mirror: A Look at Cultural Misinterpretation and Misrepresentation

The "Actress Mirror," made by Train Corporation in Japan, has been recently introduced to the US market and sold in the Paul Smith retail. It is a compact mirror with 8 built-in LED lights, powered by a 12V battery housed inside the hinge of the mirror's clamshell. With that information, fashion tech DIYers like you probably can figure out how to make one yourself by procuring 8 LEDs rated around 1.5V and wiring them to a 12V power source (1.5V x 8 = 12V). But this post is not about making a lighted mirror. What I'm wondering is this:
